The religious situation in Belarus

Some common inferences

In Belarus, by January of this year, 1315 Orthodox communities (1092temples), on the second place Protestants- 983 among which only Pentacosts - 482, bypassed on this parameter the second on "historicity" Catholic Church (433 communities) are registered. It is necessary to note only, that Orthodox and Catholic parishes are much more on average. Though, on the other hand, it is impossible to forget and that, as a rule, Protestants are characterized by much greater activityand actualization of the faith, that are more involved in the Church life. There is less than half of general number ranking of this direction of Christianity, if not 90 percent in any way. The similar parameter in the Orthodox church does not exceed 1 %.Most of "historical orthodox people” gets under that category to which and the head of the state carries himself - "orthodox atheists ". Situation in the Catholic church similar to it, too. Naturally, such situation has destroying effect on churches "historical churches ". And it is very often that self-identification as "Orthodox" or "Catholic" plays a role some kind of the "brand" specifying on some certain national and even political orientation. Though Protestants are not quite free from this, but it concerns more besides its "historical" branches, as, for example, Calvinism and Lutheranism.

In general there's quite clear progressing tendency here – the more religious community is fuzzy the easier it dares to count in the numbers of casual people. And that erodes it even more. Actually it that other as the same persecution from "world" on the Church, but in many respects it's more artful than the open prosecutions. And the apostasy isn’t in the open renunciation of belief, and that some people who is alien and even hostile to the Church are allowed to talk and operate on behalf of Church. Thus "church people" are inclined to welcome with all the heart this barbarity, as a certain improbable favour, as a sign on “the increased authority of church" and so forth. Thus and absolutely false sensation is cultivate in relation of people "external" to church, that "churchmen" "increase influence", and just about "they will force to pray ". Thus, the church actually appears in double loss - it is emasculated from within and adjusts vigilance outside. There is no prize even minimal, as rules. All that "favour" appear empty promises and declarations.

In this sense the history with acceptance of the new law about freedom of worship and religious organizationsis indicative. It seemed for someone, that it precisely is "favour". The especial role of Orthodoxy, and behind it and other "historical" religions is proclaimed in the law. It is interesting, that among Protestant denominations the "historical" status is got by the least influential and "diluted" one - to Lutheranism. All other Protestantism hasn't received a mention among "played a historical role" faiths in spite of the fact that it competes to Orthodoxy or Catholicism already on equal.

But, certainly, nobody was guided by special love to Orthodoxy and a Catholicism here. It is free or involuntarily, such acts consolidates “the religious atheism " and superficial perception of religion as some kind of a "cultural" phenomenon where frank prejudices and pagan rituals are often cultivated under mark "traditions". The church decays from within literally.

Though it seems, that the Orthodox Church has won in something - with the state is entered into the general "frame" agreement and as 14 various programs of cooperationwith departments and by the ministries. It’s in education and formation, too. Some of these programs come to the end in 2005 year. But any real results of this "cooperation" there are not. Moreover, religious "influence" becomes more and more "inappropriate" in some spheres connected with ideology (formation, for example), as even in the cut most down kind it isn't entered in the Soviet schemes of ideological formation active restored now. Therefore "gained" parties actually have lost. I don’t approve, that "lost" parties have won, but the certain resource of PR has worked on them here, certainly. There’s for foreign observers especially .

So the politician of the present management of the Belarus Orthodox Church in attitudes with the state and an external world in general can consider safely ruined.It is completely subordinate to will of the master. And it resignedly accepts all steps of the authorities, including on restriction of church. Exile from schools (under the new law it is given up to Sunday schools in rent of premises of educational establishments), severe constraints for the sanction of construction of new temples (is necessary presence on hands of the means making more of half of budget cost of a temple), frequentative increase in the tax at the ground, laid down frequently excessive burden on parishes. Only sometimes we hear shy "sorrow" among the general laudatory tone of greetings on celebratory church-state actions. But it remains ineffectual. In fact it is visible to all, that "all is good" in attitudes of church and the state. What's for still something to undertake?

If to speak about other "national" features of a religious life in Belarus it is accepted to mention about the Uniat branches of Catholicism and the Authocephalous Orthodoxy. Perhaps, such attention to this factor is caused by analogy and affinity to Ukraine. Anyhow, but the marked branches of Christianity in Belarus play incommensurably much scantier role.

The Greco-Catholic Church was covered up to two thirds of population, but there was it very long ago - with1596 for 1839. Accordingly, in difference from Ukraine, people's memory of this has practically died. The Uniat Church has appeared in paradoxical position - on the one hand, something to anybody unknown and new, and with another, the claim for "nationality" and national roots. In the beginning 90's some active steps on revival Uniat Church as "national church" of Belarusians there were, but without big success. It remains some "new" religion. And it is similar, what even the Roman Catholicism has appeared more attractive as such "new" religion. By the current moment in Belarus 13 communities of Greco-Catholics are registered all only.

Around of Orthodoxy the known intrigue with "authocephaly" was conceived, too. But it has appeared even more unpromising, than revival Uniat Church. The accent was also done on idea of “national church". Perhaps, it was possible for someone to involve on this wave also , if not too evident faintness Belarus "authocephaly" ,moreover shattered into conflicting groupings with frank "self-ordаined” hierarchy. In a little comprehensible kind the Belarus Authocephalous Orthodoxy was kept only abroad, whence they periodically threaten with “a campaign to Minsk ". Probably, in reply to it the Belarus Orthodox Church of MP registered "collective property right"on use of the name "orthodox" and its derivatives. But, apparently, it is the exaggerated fears. In all country there’s no one, let not registered, but some mature and representative community.

And at all it is not audible about activity of other directions of the "alternative" Orthodoxy that has weight in Russia.
